Noting great production and taste
Making the right choice
As a content creator and broadcaster, I am always listening for the right combination and perfect timing or transition. During an interview, post production, pre-planning, it requires intense thought. While it doesn’t always come quickly, or with good execution, when a show or post hits right, it is true art.
I am often analyzing media, not just my own, but in everyday life. Here are a few examples I have found to be inspiring, and to me, the perfect choice.
1. 1970s Song Says So Much
As a James Spader fan, I really enjoyed The Blacklist. When this came along in the first midseason, it was perfect! Suddenly, I became more familiar with Gordon Lightfoot. Bonus that it borders breaking the fourth wall as Red himself starts the LP.
2. Audio Examples (Tada!)
One of my many interviews with Peter Schickele explained one of my favorite compositions, which I never knew until he shared! It was a real joy to put his music with the story he told. I call this technique “demonstrative” production.
3. Timing is everything (The Perfect Ending)
The first season of Your Friends & Neighbors on Apple TV was fun and well made. Jon Hamm (pictured below) is believable in unbelievable situations.
So when Season 2 dropped last Friday, I was very excited! It didn’t disappoint. In fact, the ending inspired me to write this post! It’s not a spoiler to say that the first episode, We’re Here Until We’re Not, uses the 1983 Talking Heads song “Burning Down the House” to great effect.

Burning down the house
Only in the last year did I happen to stumble upon this version (and I was completely blown away by the collaboration of Tom Jones + The Cardigans!) of “Burning Down the House” from 2003 that I completely recommend:
